Tehran (IP) - Top Adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati met former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki this morning (Tuesday) in Tehran.

Iran PressIran News: Top Adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati stated that the West Asian region is under the influence of the fraternal, close, and good relations between Iran and Iraq.

Velayati described Nouri al-Maliki as a 'diligent friend in advancing the interests of the Iraqi people' and regarded the meeting as 'very positive' one.

Velayati also expressed hope that Iraqi politicians, led by the new government and Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, would be able to take great steps in resolving the problems in Iraq and the region.

During the meeting, Velayati and Nouri al-Maliki stressed the need for further development of the interactions between the two countries under the shadow of  4,000-year-old intertwined historical relations and many cultural commonalities between the two nations.

On Monday, Nouri al-Maliki had also met Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC)  Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani and the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and discussed regional issues.
