Tehran (IP) - Saeed Khatibzadeh, the spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in response to the statement of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the chaos in Khuzestan province: "The Commissioner's statement on the chaos in Khuzestan is based on false and regrettable accusations."

Iran PressIran news: The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added: "The method of the accusation clearly shows that these accusations are politically motivated. Therefore, the statement of the High Commissioner is more like a political statement with a language of a threat than the words of an international human rights body."

He said: "The water crisis in Khuzestan results from a series of natural phenomena, especially drought, and consequences of sanctions imposed on Iran. The country has prevented access to technology and investment in the water sector in Khuzestan."

Khatibzadeh added: "The question is why the Commissioner has not so recklessly condemned the illegal sanctions imposed by the United States against the Iranian nation, which has led to the violation of many fundamental human rights ?!"

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran emphasized: "It seems that the efforts of the Commissioner's Office to create divisions among Iranians are in line with the policy of few special governments who are openly against Iranians."

Khatibzadeh said: "The governments are abusing human rights and supporting politically motivated anti-human rights resolutions against Iran in the Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly."

Khatibzadeh stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran respects the right to peaceful protests of its citizens, adding: "The presence of the police in such demonstrations is to prevent disturbances."
