Zarif: Astana summit should be held soon
Tehran (IP) - The only mechanism that has been able to ease tensions in Syria and move the country towards stability and the fight against terrorism has been the Astana peace process, the Iranian Foreign Minister said.
Zarif described the Astana peace process as a successful one, saying: "We believe that the summit should be held as soon as possible."
"I had a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov a few minutes ago, and he also emphasized the need for this," he said.
Zarif and Lavrov discussed the ongoing unrest in Idlib of Syria and the latest developments on the spread of coronavirus as well as Iran's measures in this regard over the phone on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said consultations were underway to hold the Astana summit as soon as possible.
In his press conference in Foreign Ministry through video conference on Monday in Tehran, Mousavi said: "The only fundamental solution for Syria is a political approach, there is nothing more important than the Astana process. Let's go back. This process has been working for several years and a good agreement will be reached between the three countries in the meantime. If we go back to this process, we will find good solutions for Syria and Idlib, satisfying everyone."
Earlier on Saturday, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, in a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, said that the situation in Syria's Idlib is worrying and the decisions made under the Astana Process must be operationalised as soon as possible.
