A police officer shot and injured a man in a Berlin cathedral on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the officer fired to stop the man “rioting” and that the incident was not believed to be terror-related.

“One of our officers shot a rioting man at Berlin cathedral shortly after 4pm,” Berlin police said in a tweet. “He was injured in the legs.”

According to Welt newspaper the injured man is German and was armed with a knife. He was shouting and rampaging though the cathedral, causing panic.

Police were called by cathedral staff to deal with the incident and when they were unable to calm the man one officer opened fire to incapacitate him.

There were unconfirmed reports a police officer was also injured. The cathedral was sealed off and witnesses were taken to hospital to be treated for shock.
