The Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), organized a two-day workshop on “Combating Trafficking in Persons and Human Smuggling in the ECO Region” on July 29-30, 2024, at the ECO Secretariat in Tehran.

Iran PressIran news: The workshop aims to bring together experts, policymakers and practitioners from relevant regional and international organizations, as well as ECO member countries.

The participants will delve into the critical issues surrounding human trafficking, discussing root causes and challenges in combating this menace.

Additionally, they will share knowledge, best practices and insights on the prevention, protection and prosecution of human trafficking.

The Chief of Mission of IOM in Iran, Lalini Veerassamy, in a speech stated: "Combating human smuggling is a priority for ECO members."

ECO Secretary General Ambassador, Khusrav Noziri, also said: "The support of ECO member states are a must to deal with any problems." He reiterated the need for more collaboration, cooperation, and support to counter the issues.

Noziri pointed out that the delegates must identify the root causes and challenges and focus upon the legal and operational frameworks.

He went on to conclude: The workshop aims to Foster and strengthen cross-border collaboration and agree on meaningful actions and recommendations which would benefit all CEO members to help fight against these growing transnational crimes at regional and global level.
