The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that malnutrition in Gaza has reached “alarming levels,” with dozens of deaths in July alone.

Why it matters:

WHO recorded 74 malnutrition-related deaths in 2025, with 63 occurring in July, including 24 children under five. The agency says most victims died upon arrival at health facilities, showing signs of severe wasting.

WHO calls for uninterrupted aid flows, including food, medicine, and therapeutic supplies, to prevent further deterioration.

The big picture:

Gaza’s humanitarian collapse is deepening amid ongoing Israeli military operations and a total blockade. WHO reports that nearly 1 in 5 children under five in Gaza City is acutely malnourished, with rates tripling since June. The situation is most dire in Gaza City, Khan Younis, and the Middle Area. Aid centers are overwhelmed, and fuel shortages threaten their continued operation.

Key points:

  •  More than 5,000 treated for malnutrition in early July , 18% diagnosed with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) , 6500 treated in June, highest since war began
  • Over 40% of pregnant and breastfeeding women are severely malnourished
  • WHO demands consistent, unhindered aid delivery, and immediate ceasefire
  •  Aid distribution sites have become “death traps” due to targeted attacks by the Israeli regime
