People on the Handala aid ship heading to Gaza to break Israel’s blockade are preparing themselves for the possibility of Israeli forces storming the vessel.

Why it matters:

Famine in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels. With humanitarian relief blocked at the border, the region has been plunged into what observers describe as a “mass death zone,” where tens of thousands of women and children have reportedly succumbed to starvation and malnutrition-related conditions.

The big picture:

Amid widespread governmental inaction, global humanitarian organizations continue efforts to support Gaza's civilians. The Handala, which departed from Italy bound for Gaza, stands as a symbolic mission of solidarity and defiance. It now approaches its destination under growing uncertainty.

The state of play:

Handala aid ship bound for Gaza to break Israeli blockade on Saturday, arrived at about 97 nautical miles off the Gaza coast. The Handala departed from Italy, carrying baby formula, food, and medicine under international maritime and humanitarian law. It carries 21 unarmed civilians, including lawmakers, medics, and volunteers.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organizes the voyage, is livestreaming the ship’s movements on its YouTube channel, including real-time radar images.
