Why it matters:
The Palestinian cause is getting increasingly important for the people of the world; Palestine got more attention, especially after October 7, 2023, as the Israeli regime launched an all-out war on the Gaza Strip and caused a human catastrophe that is continuing to date.
Flashback:
On July 26th, 2014, the Nigerian Army opened fire with live ammunition on unarmed members of the Islamic Movement during a peaceful annual Quds Day procession in solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine. This tragic incident resulted in the martyrdom of 35 people, including three biological sons of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. On another similar occasion in Abuja and Kaduna, combined security forces comprising the Army and Police killed scores of unarmed citizens.
The big picture:
The event held was titled "Opportunities For Progress in the Palestinian Matter: How Critical and Effective Are Global Solidarity Movement and Awareness."
On the eve of the event, hundreds of Muslims conducted prayers for the repose of the Shuhada at Dar Rahma cemetery in Zaria city, where hundreds of martyrs were buried. On Sunday evening, a conference was held in Abuja where scholars and human rights activists spoke about Palestine.
The participants lauded the steadfastness of the leader and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in the struggle for Palestine and their resilience despite all the persecution and even massacres by the authorities in the West African country.
What they're saying:
Mu'allimah Zeenah Ibrahim, wife of Nigerian Muslim Movement Leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, in her speech, called on the Nigerian people, irrespective of their religion or sect, to stand up for justice for the Palestinians.
She emphasised that supporting Palestinians’ freedom is not limited to only members of the Islamic Movement but is a task ahead for all Muslims, Christians, and even those who don't believe in God.
