Iran (IP)- The 8th of May is named the "Pahlevani culture and zoorkhaneh sport" day in the Iranian calendar.

Iran PressIran News: 8th of May, the day of the battle of Imam Ali (a.s.) with Amr ibn Abd Wadd in the battle of Khandaq (in the Prophet Muhammad era), has been designated as "Pahlevani and Zoorkhaneh Sport Culture Day"; a sport that has a long history in Iranian culture.

Battle of Khandaq dates back to AD 627. It is an early Muslim victory that ultimately forced the Meccans to recognize the political and religious strength of the Muslim community in Medina.

Zoorkhaneh is a Persian type of sports club where athletes undergo rigorous regiment training under the direction of masters known Morshed.

The circular pit in the center zoorkhaneh called 'gaud' is a symbol of humility and modesty of athletes.

Many people in East Azerbaijan province are interested in Pahlevani and Zoorkhaneh sports and veterans of these sports consider familiarization and attracting young people to it as one of the main needs of the sport.

Seyyed Es'haghi, a veteran athlete of zoorkhaneh sport in Tabriz, told IranPress reporter: "This is known as the national sport of Iran, and the champions take Imam Ali as their role model."

Asghar Sefidi, coach, athlete, and mentor of Pahlevani and Zoorkhaneh sports, in a conversation with IranPress, stated that Iran introduced the sport to the world and said that after the formation of the World Federation of Zorkhaneh Sports, the sport was revived and exported from Iran to the countries of the world.

He also added: "Pahlevani and Zoorkhaneh sport belongs to Iran and the Islamic Republic has all tried to keep the sport alive."
