Iraq (IP) - The Islamic Republic of Iran opened its international branch of Tehran University of Medical Science in Karbala, central Iraq, on Wednesday.

 Iran PressMiddle East: The Iranian Minister of Health and his Iraqi counterpart had a meeting in Baghdad on Tuesday, where they announced that the first international branch of the Tehran University of Medical Science would be opened in Karbala.

Tehran University of Medical Science's branch was officially opened in Sibtain University in Karbala with the participation of Iran's Minister of Health Bahram Einollahi, Iraqi Minister of Health Saleh Mohammad al-Hosnawi, Iran's ambassador to Baghdad Mohammad-Kazem Al Sadegh, as well as a group of other Iraqi officials. 

Still, the two countries' ministry of health reported the formation of a joint committee to discuss medical cooperation. 

Mohammad Shariati, Deputy for International branches of Tehran Medical Science University told Iran Press correspondent that so far 160 students had enrolled in the Iranian university of medical science. 

 

Al-Sibtain University has 42 classes each that can accommodate 70 students on average, 20 labs, and one hospital equipped with advanced medical devices.

In the first phase, Sibtain University, the educational management of which was assigned to Tehran University of Medical Sciences for 50 years, the faculties of medicine, rehabilitation, and nursing and midwifery in the first phase.

Shariati stressed that the new university could turn into one of one the brilliant universities of West Asia, with a leading role in expanding scientific cooperation. 

 

Moreover, Gholamreza Abazari, Iranian cultural attaché to Iraq in the opening ceremony called the scientific ties between Tehran and Baghdad are developing as this Medical Center could play a significant role in boosting medical cooperation between the two brotherly countries.

The trip of medical teams to Iran and Iraq, joint medical conferences, treatment of patients, cooperation over supplying drugs and medical equipment, and training of medical and health staff were among the issues discussed during the meeting.

Sibtain University, the educational management of which was assigned to Tehran University of Medical Sciences for 50 years, will have 3 faculties of medicine, rehabilitation, and nursing and midwifery in the first phase.
