Iraq (IP) - According to the results of the second round of the presidential elections in the Iraqi Parliament, Abdul Latif Rashi pushed aside his rival Barham Saleh was elected the new president of Iraq.

Iran PressMiddle East: The House of Representatives elected, today, Thursday, Abdul Latif, as President of the Republic, after obtaining the majority of votes in the second round of the voting process for the position in which he competed with candidate Barham Salih.

The Media Department of the House of Representatives said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "Rasheed won 162 votes, while Salih won 99 votes and 8 were considered invalid, out of the total number of voters of 269 deputies."

Rashid, 78, is a British-educated engineer and was the Iraqi minister of water resources from 2003 to 2010. He has 15 days to invite a nominee from the largest parliamentary bloc to form a government.

As Minister for Water Resources from September 2003 to December 2010, Rashid was responsible for a range of issues, including irrigation, municipal and industrial water supply, hydropower, flood control, and environmental requirements, including marsh restoration. After the removal of Saddam Hussein's regime in April 2004, the Minister oversaw dramatic improvements in the management of the country's water resources.
