The EU foreign service has appointed a French diplomat as its new ambassador to Russia amid the Ukraine war.

Iran PressEurope: Markus Ederer was appointed EU Ambassador to Moscow on May 16, 2017. Before him, the position was held by Lithuanian Vygaudas Usackas.

The European Union (EU) has replaced the head of the diplomatic mission in Russia. The German diplomat Markus Ederer, who holds this post, left Moscow. 

The EU foreign service has appointed French diplomat Roland Galharague as its new ambassador to Russia amid the Ukraine conflict. Galharague is currently France's ambassador to Malaysia but previously ran a department dealing with Russia and Ukraine in the French foreign ministry. He replaces career German diplomat Markus Ederer, who has held the Moscow post since 2017 and who also used to be the EU's ambassador in Beijing.

“The change of the head of the EU mission in Moscow is planned. Markus Ederer left Russia, and in the near future this post will be taken by the former French ambassador to Malaysia, Roland Galyarag. His appointment to this post was approved by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in June,” the source said. 219
