Arbaeen pilgrimage for those who were left behind to reach Karbala, Iraq, began this morning across Ira, including Tehran, with the motto "We Stand on Our Pledge."

Why It Matters:

The massive turnout of citizens and various organizations in Tehran’s Arbaeen walk for those unable to travel to Karbala reflects deep national and religious solidarity in honoring the values of Ashura.

The big picture:

The walk began at 5 a.m. following congregational morning prayers and the recitation of the Arbaeen Ziyarat at Tehran’s Imam Hussein (AS) Square. Pilgrims are marching toward the holy shrine of Hazrat Abdul Azim Hassani (AS), known as Tehran’s spiritual Qibla, in a passionate display of devotion to the Ahl al-Bayt and Imam Hussein (AS).

Key points:

  •  Around 2,200 mawakib (service stations) have been set up along the route in Tehran to serve pilgrims.

  • A storytelling campaign titled “I Am Iranian and You Are Iraqi” has been launched, encouraging youth—especially teenagers—to document and share narratives of the event.

  • A visual storytelling segment portrays atrocities against children, spanning from the tragedy of Ashura to the current situation in Gaza.
