Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref has traveled to Kyrgyzstan for a high-profile Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit, where he will advocate for Iran’s permanent membership in the bloc—a key step in Tehran’s strategy to deepen economic and political ties with Russia and Central Asia.

Why it matters:

The permanent membership of Iran in the Eurasian Economic Union could significantly expand its trade and political ties with Russia, Central Asia, and other key regional players.

The big picture:

Aref departed Tehran for Kyrgyzstan to attend the EAEU’s intergovernmental council meeting. The trip follows Iran’s observer status approval last year and signals Tehran’s growing engagement with the bloc amid Western sanctions and shifting global alliances.

  • Aref visited Turkmenistan on his previous regional trip to participate in the Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC) conference.

What he is saying:

Aref: "The strategy of Pezeshkian Administration is to pave the way for Iran’s permanent membership in the Eurasian Union."

"Developing relations with neighboring countries, especially Eurasia, is a priority for Iran."

"Cultural and historical commonalities demand expanded ties, and we’ve made good progress, including finalizing a free trade agreement."

Key points:

  • Iran’s observer status was approved in 2023, and it now seeks full membership.
  • The EAEU meeting will review past cooperation and discuss boosting trade, logistics, and transit links.
  • 87% of Iran’s exports to the EAEU will soon enjoy zero tariffs under the new trade deal.

State of play:

The EAEU, led by Russia, includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Iran’s push for deeper integration aligns with its "Look East" policy, reducing reliance on Western markets. The Cholpon-Ata summit could accelerate economic cooperation, particularly in energy and transportation.
