Tehran (IP) – The Iranian Defense Ministry unveiled its new domestically-developed light military transport aircraft, the “Simorgh”, on May 19th, 2022.

Iran PressIran news: The unveiling was carried out at the Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Corporation with Defense Minister Mohammad-Reza Ashtiani in attendance.

Overview

Simorgh light military transport aircraft is the result of redesigning and developing the aircraft of the same generation, Iran-140, which is the Iranian sample of the Antonov An-140 aircraft made in Ukraine.

Although Simorgh is structurally similar to its peers, the avionics system, propulsion, new components, and maneuverability are not comparable to similar models; this product has created a new arena and knowledge for designing and building more advanced aircraft.

Characteristics of Simorgh transport aircraft include lightness, suitable cargo volume, suitable flight radius, suitability to Iran's climatic conditions, and ability to land and take off in short runways; its speed allows it to play an ambulance role.

Specification & features

Simorgh has two turboprop engines that can provide a maximum speed of 530 km / h and fly a distance of 3900 km. This aircraft needs a 1,450 meter-long runway to take off and a 900 meter-long runway for landing. It can carry up to 6 tons of cargo, making Simorgh a suitable option for military and commercial transport fleets compared to similar models.

The appearance of Iran-140 compared to Simorgh shows changes in the structure of Simorgh, especially in the empennage, which includes the addition of a ramp and changes in the structure of the horizontal rudder, including horizontal stabilizers and elevator.

Simorgh has significant differences compared to Iran-140, in a way that in Iran-140 aircraft, the horizontal rudder is almost V-shaped, while in Simorgh, this rudder is flat.

In addition to carrying standard containers used to move cargo, Simorgh can also accommodate and transport various light vehicles.

The installation of seats for commuting manpower and paratroopers, as well as the installation of a stretcher, are other items that have been considered in the interior design of Simorgh.

Another point of difference between Simorgh and Iran-140 is the installation of two side doors at the end of the aircraft for paratroopers to jump.

By changing the design of the wings from a trapezoidal shape in Iran -140 to a rectangular shape in Simorgh, the size of the wings has increased. On the other hand, although expanding the wing size of the aircraft causes induced drag, it also has advantages, including increasing the capacity of the aircraft's fuel tanks and reducing the runway length required for landing and takeoff.
