Dushanbe (IP) - Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council in a meeting with his Russian counterpart stressed the need to establish strategic Tehran-Moscow cooperation in the face of US unilateral policies.

In this meeting, Shamkhani expressed satisfaction with the high level of consultations between the two countries at various levels and stressed the need to further strengthen cooperation between Iran and Russia in view of new developments in the international arena.

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, referring to the extensive Western sanctions against Russia, said: "The Islamic Republic of Iran has been subject to sanctions for 43 years and has become a symbol of the ineffectiveness of sanctions to impose political will on independent countries."

Shamkhani stressed the need to establish strategic Tehran-Moscow cooperation in the face of US unilateral policies, adding: "It seems that sanctions against Russia will not be lifted with the end of the war; therefore, it is necessary to formulate a system to coordinate cooperation between sanctioned countries on a strategic and long-term horizon."

He considered the creation of a fundamental leap in economic interactions and relations between the two sides as one of the most important aspects of relations and an accelerating factor in promoting other aspects of cooperation and said: "Creating a platform for coexistence under sanctions and turning sanctions into an opportunity to strengthen a productive and endogenous economy is essential."

He stressed that the development of cooperation between the SCO member states and the provision of joint financial, banking and tariff mechanisms among the members of this organization is one of the important measures that can prevent the impact of illegal sanctions on economic and trade relations between the countries.

Explaining the West's efforts to make  Russia get involved in the Ukraine crisis to reduce its focus in other areas, especially Central Asia, the Caucasus and Syria, Shamkhani said: "Some countries are taking advantage of the Ukraine crisis to pursue expansionist plans in the region, while it is the pursuit of their ambitious goals that must be seriously challenged."

Expressing concern over the situation in Afghanistan and the continuance of  insecure presence of various terrorist groups in the country, Shamkhani added: "The lack of an inclusive government in this country is one of the main reasons for the continuing instability and insecurity and increasing economic and livelihood pressures on the people."

In the end, Shamkhani announced the closer and planned cooperation of the national security institutions of the two countries to provide the necessary conditions in the field of new economic, trade, financial and security relations, especially in the context of sanctions, and said: "We are ready to continue the meetings of the relevant officials of the two countries in Tehran and Moscow."

Sanctions were imposed even if Ukraine crisis were not formed: Patrushev

In the meeting with Iran's Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Secretary of the National Security Council of the Russian Federation said that since the West is determined to deal Russia a blow, West orchestrated sanctions were imposed even if the crisis in Ukraine were not formed."

Nikolai Patrushev explained the roots of the Ukraine crisis and the widespread Western intervention to turn the country into a hot bed of insecurity and instability, saying: "Russia's special operation in Ukraine is just an excuse to impose extensive sanctions on our country, and because the West is determined to strike at Russia, these sanctions were imposed even if the crisis in Ukraine were not formed."

Patrushev called the clarification of the very bitter facts about the establishment of chemical and biological laboratories by the United States in Ukraine as one of the fruits of Russia's special operations in that country and said: "Accurate and undeniable documents are available to prove US illegal activities in Ukraine which we have to publish soon."

About the unprecedented Western pressure on Iran and Russia, Patrushev stated: "The West is trying to impose its will on other countries by using sanctions as tools, but we must plan to overcome the existing conditions by activating new mechanisms, especially the use of currency and an independent financial exchange system.

Emphasizing the need to activate the extensive cooperation capacities between Russia and Iran, he stressed the need to finalize a long-term economic cooperation agreement between the two countries, adding: "Transit cooperation and the completion of the North-South corridor is one of the most important steps where the two countries should make more efforts to use its capacities."

"The widespread Western sanctions against Russia have created an opportunity for our people to become more aware of the futility of the approach of liberal political groups in Russia to the need for full engagement and cooperation with the West, which has hit our national production," Patrushev said.

The Secretary of the National Security Council of Russia called for the speedy finalization of the documents of Iran's full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and added: "Iran's active and comprehensive presence in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will bring wide economic potential to this organization."

Patrushev called the West's planned effort to expand its military presence in the region "very dangerous and worrying."

"The tripartite defense pact between the United States, the UK and Australia, called AUKUS, is also the creation of a new North Atlantic Treaty Organzation (NATO) aimed at increasing pressure on China.

AUKUS, is a trilateral security pact between  Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States , announced on 15 September 2021 for the Indo-Pacific region. Under the pact, the US and the UK will help Australia to acquire nuclear- powered submarines. 

Referring to the holding of the sixth Caspian Summit in Turkmenistan this June, he stressed the need to finalize the Caspian Sea legal regime to develop cooperation between the five countries in the region, as well as preventing the military presence of other countries in the region, he stated that the Caspian Sea should not be turned into a military zone, and therefore holding military maneuvers in the presence of third countries in this region would not be acceptable at all.

Patrushev called the current situation in Afghanistan unfavorable and worrying, and referred to the initiative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in establishing a regional security dialogue meeting with Afghanistan's neighbors, adding: "The opportunity for continuous meetings to help increase stability and security in Afghanistan and the establishment of an inclusive government in this country should be maximized."
