Leftist parties, human rights activists, and pro-Palestinian supporters gathered outside U.S. embassies and consulates in major cities across Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro, Recife, and Brasília, to protest against the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza and Brazil’s relationship with Israel.

Why it matters:

While the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is getting worse, the protests reflect growing international solidarity with Palestinians. Brazil’s foreign relations and trade policies are under scrutiny as demonstrators call for a shift away from Israel and against US-backed policies.

The big picture:

Following the anti-Israeli movement sparked from the American universities after the Israeli regime began the genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, the demonstrations are spreading globally.

In Brazil, the demonstrators demanded an immediate end to the Gaza conflict, a complete severance of Brazil’s diplomatic and trade ties with Israel, cancellation of Trump-era trade tariffs, and increased international pressure on the Israeli regime.

What we're hearing:

Protesters called for an immediate end to the war in Gaza and cutting Brazil’s ties with Israel. The protests culminated with effigies of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu being burned as a symbolic rejection of U.S. and Israeli policies.
