Iran PressAsia: Yassin Malik, an Islamic activist in the Indian-controlled Kashmir region, opposes the country's military presence in Kashmir.

An Indian court last week sentenced Yasin Malik, leader of the Kashmir Liberation Front, to life in prison, prompting a backlash from the Kashmiris.

Meanwhile, Clashes erupted in Srinagar' against the sentencing of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik in the 2017 terror funding case.

The people assembled outside Yasin Malik's house and staged protests. This is as Srinagar observed a shutdown today against the sentencing of the JKLF chief.

Parts of Kashmir have been in control of India for years, deploying thousands of troops and killing tens of thousands over three decades by New Delhi.

The people of Kashmir are calling for the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution on holding a referendum to determine the status of Kashmir, but the Indian government has always opposed this move.
