Pres. Raisi:

Tehran (IP) – In a phone call with his French counterpart, the Iranian president said that the main issue for reaching an agreement in the Vienna talks is to ensure the interests of the Iranian people.

Iran PressIran News: Iran's international nuclear agreement or the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed between the country and P5+1 countries (Russia, China, UK, Germany, France, and the US) in 2015, but the US scrapped it on May 18, 2018, re-imposing more sanctions on Iran.

The eighth round of sanctions talks begun in Vienna on December 27 is ongoing in Vienna, but without the US after a short break.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, in a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, stated that Iran had made constructive proposals during the Vienna talks and had considered the proposals made by the other parties to the talks based on their compatibility with the interests of the Iranian nation.

Noting that the Iranian delegation has repeatedly reiterated that it welcomes initiatives guaranteeing and protecting the rights of the Iranian people, Raisi said political pressures or claims had been made in order to maintain pressure over the Iranian people and undermine the prospect of reaching an agreement.

He underlined that any agreement in Vienna must include the lifting of sanctions, the provision of a valid guarantee, and an end to political issues and claims.

Referring to Iran's active role in the fight against terrorism alongside Iraq and Syria, Raisi stated, "If it were not for Iran, especially Martyr Soleimani's effective confrontation with terrorism, ISIL would have deployed its forces in Europe today."
