New York (IP) - Iran's ambassador and deputy permanent representative to the United Nations said that the United States and the Israeli regime are the main obstacles to the complete elimination of chemical weapons in the world.

Iran PressAmerica: Zahra Ershadi, Iran's Deputy Representative to UN said at a UN Security Council meeting on West Asia on Wednesday: "We reiterate our long-standing position of strong condemnation of the use of chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere, under any circumstances."

The senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations added: "The only absolute guarantee that chemical weapons will not be used again is the total destruction of all chemical weapons around the world and also taking all necessary measures to ensure the non-production and -use of such weapons in the future."

Ershadi added: "In fact, this is the main goal of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which can only be achieved through its full, balanced, effective and non-discriminatory implementation, as well as the universality of this convention."

"It is a matter of grave concern that, as a result of the United States' failure to comply, as the only member of the Convention still possessing chemical weapons, with its commitments on the deadline for the destruction of chemical weapons, this goal has not yet been achieved," said Iran's deputy UN envoy.

The senior diplomat of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations said: "Another obstacle in this regard is the non-universality of the convention. To achieve this lofty goal, the Israeli regime must be forced to accede to this convention without any further prerequisites or delays."

Iran's Deputy Representative to the United Nations continued: "We once again warn of the serious effects of politicization of the implementation of the Convention on its authority and credibility, and therefore call for non-politicization of the activities of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. All members should avoid abusing this organization with political motives to advance their national goals."

"In this regard, despite the significant efforts of the Syrian government in fulfilling its obligations under the convention, including the complete destruction, in the shortest possible time and under difficult conditions, and the holding of monthly council meetings to review the Syrian case has no justification," she said.

She stressed that such meetings, instead of helping the goals of the convention, undermine its authority and the credibility of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and deepens the crisis of credibility of the UN Security Council.

"We welcome the presentation of the 97th monthly report of Syria on its activities regarding the destruction of chemical weapons and their production facilities," Ershadi said.

The Deputy Representative of Iran to the United Nations added: "The Islamic Republic of Iran once again wants to guarantee the independent, impartial and professional activity of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons."
