Iran's ambassador to the United Nations stated on Tuesday, Unilateral US sanctions have prevented affected countries from accessing the financial and development resources needed to achieve the goals of sustainable development.

Iran PressAmerica: Majid Takht-Ravanchi at the UN Security Council meeting on "Maintaining International Peace and Security: Deprivation, inequality and conflict," Referring to US addiction to impose sanctions against other countries, stated that unilateral coercive measures, such as the imposition of unilateral US sanctions on the Iranian people, have had serious consequences for the well-being of all sections of society.

These illegal actions, which have severely reduced access to the basic needs of the people especially the medicine and medical equipment to deal with Covid-19, contributes to exacerbating economic problems," he added.

Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations also stated that issues such as deprivation and inequality could act as potential drivers and agents of conflict and undermine opportunities for sustainable peace.

He added that the constructive participation of the United Nations in the prevention of conflicts requires coherence, sustained interaction and coordination between the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Economic and Social Council, in accordance with their provisions under the Charter of the United Nations.

"The Security Council must adhere to the aims and principles of the Charter of the United Nations," he said. Issues such as deprivation and inequality, which have social and economic dimensions, should be addressed by the competent organs of the United Nations, namely the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, the Iranian ambassador noted. 219
