Bandar Torkaman (IP) - As the seawater recedes on the shores of Torkaman port in Golestan province, a plant called Salicornia grows on its shores.

Iran PressIran news: Salicornia is a halophile plant that grows along the seashore and tolerates up to twice the salinity of seawater.

Dr. Nayer Azam Khoshkholghsima, a member of the faculty of Agriculture Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran (ABRII), said about the economic importance of the Salicornia plant, adding that a kilo of Salicornia plant costs $ 50 in world markets.

She stated that the Salicornia plant is low in sodium and people with liver, heart, and kidney disease, and high blood pressure can use it.

In the field of medicine and industry, the Salicornia plant, in addition to meeting domestic needs, can have a good market outside of Iran.

Agricultural experts in Iran believe that the reduction of freshwater resources has caused Iranian agriculture to face serious limitations, and the best solution is to study salt-loving plants.
