In a phone call, Iran’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi asked Pakistan’s Army Chief to intensify “practical action against terrorists” along their shared border, citing increased terrorist activity and offering full cooperation to “eradicate terrorism” in the region.

Why it matters:
The call comes amid rising cross-border tensions and terrorist threats affecting both nations, highlighting shared security concerns and the need for coordinated military action to stabilize the region.

The big picture:
Iran and Pakistan share a 900-kilometer border plagued by long-standing terrorist activity, drug smuggling, and separatist movements. While both sides have historically acknowledged the need for cooperation, operational coordination has often fallen short despite diplomatic goodwill.

What they are saying:
Iran’s Gen. Mousavi:

Unfortunately, terrorist group activities have increased on both sides of the border. We are prepared to cooperate to eradicate terrorism in this region and secure our shared borders.

We expect practical action to be taken against terrorists under the framework of this bilateral cooperation.

Any assistance within the capabilities of our armed forces will be proudly provided to our dear brothers in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir:

We fully agree with you on border security.

We must turn the Pakistan-Iran border into one of friendship, brotherhood, and economic development, and we will certainly do this together.
