Tehran (IP) - Following the attack on the Iranian Consulate in Karbala, the Iraqi ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry and met with the Director-General for Ceremonies.

Iran PressIran News: During the meeting, the Iraqi ambassador to Tehran stressed the Iraqi government's security measures to protect Iran's diplomatic facilities.

The Director-General for Ceremonies of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack on the Iranian Consulate and called on the Iraqi government to maintain security measures to protect Iran's diplomatic places under the 1963 Vienna Convention.

The Iraqi ambassador also stressed his country's commitment to protecting the security of diplomatic sites.

On Sunday night, the local media outlet reported that some rioters had attacked the consulate of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Iraqi city of Karbala.

According to news sources, the attackers set fire to the outer wall of the consulate.

The spokesman for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the attack and had said that a note of protest was handed over to the Iraqi embassy in Tehran. 

In his weekly presser on Monday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said: "Last night, a note of protest was handed over to the Iraqi embassy in Tehran following the attack on the Iranian Consulate in Karbala."
