The US Treasury Department has authorized financial transactions with Juan Guaidó, Venezuela's opposition leader and self-proclaimed president.

Iran PressAmerica: The deal, issued Monday, also allows some transactions with the National Assembly and other opposition to the Venezuelan government. The National Assembly, which is controlled by the opposition to the government of Nicolas Maduro, boycotted the December parliamentary elections and extended its term for another year.

In January 2019, Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaidó, in coordination with the US government, declared himself president of Venezuela and was quickly recognized by Washington and a group of allies.

After announcing its support for Guaidó, the Trump administration launched a concerted effort to overthrow the Maduro administration, but sanctions ultimately failed.  219
