The United Nations on Friday condemned Israel’s designation of “safe zones” in southern Gaza, calling them “places of death” and warning that no area in the Gaza Strip offers real protection for Palestinians fleeing Israeli ongoing bombardment.

What he's saying:

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said the idea of a safe zone in Al-Mawasi is “farcical,” citing repeated airstrikes on shelters and tents.

“Bombs are dropped with chilling predictability,” Elder said from Deir al-Balah, adding that overcrowding and lack of essentials make survival nearly impossible.

“The law is very clear,” Elder said. “It is the responsibility of the occupying power to ensure nutrition, shelter, and sanitation. None of those are present.” He added that the UN initially assumed these zones wouldn’t be bombed, but they’ve been hit “dozens of times” since October 2023.
