Russian President Vladimir Putin, addressing the International Forum for Peace and Trust in Ashgabat on Friday, praised Turkmenistan’s long-standing policy of neutrality, calling it a stabilizing factor for the region and a cornerstone of Moscow’s partnership with Ashgabat.

Why it matters:

The growing Russia–Turkmenistan partnership underscores both states’ efforts to strengthen regional blocs and connectivity projects, as Moscow expands its footprint across Central Asia amid shifting global alignments.

What he is saying:

“Over the first 10 months of 2025, Russia-Turkmenistan's trade turnover has already increased by 35%, noticeably exceeding the growth rate for the entire preceding year.

Russian companies are committed to launching new investment projects in the Turkmenistan market. Collaboration is strengthening in energy, transportation, and other sectors,” Putin said.

He added that relations are advancing in a spirit of “friendship and good neighborliness,” describing the partnership as “a bright example of how partner relations should be built in the modern multipolar world.”

Putin also expressed his gratitude to Turkmenistan’s leadership, specifically thanking President Serdar Berdimuhamedov “for their hospitality.”

Putin said trade between the two countries jumped 35% in the first 10 months of 2025, outpacing last year’s overall growth, as Russian companies prepare new investments in the Turkmen market.

Putin emphasized Turkmenistan’s upcoming 2026 chairmanship of the CIS, vowing full Russian support: “Wishing all success to our Turkmen colleagues in this regard, I assure that the Russian side will render all necessary assistance.”

State of play:

Large-scale multilateral initiatives involving both countries are advancing in the Caspian Sea and Central Asia.

Work on the North–South transport corridor is underway.

Bilateral interregional contacts continue to expand.

Both countries remain active within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) market.
