Canada, Australia, and Portugal have joined the U.K. in formally recognising Palestinian statehood as Israel plans to expand settlements in the occupied West Bank and intensifies its war on Gaza.

Why it matters:

Experts say that the recognition of the state of Palestine by European countries, while also showing their frustration with Israel and its actions, especially in Gaza, puts pressure on the European Union to pursue this policy.

The big picture:

Canada, Australia, Portugal, and the U.K. have formally announced their recognition of a Palestinian state. This development occurs just before a crucial UN General Assembly meeting this week.

What they are saying:

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in a statement, announced the recognition of a Palestinian state and offered his country's partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future.

At the same time, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, in a statement, announced that his country was also recognising Palestinian statehood.

Later on Sunday, Portugal’s Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said that the recognition of the state of Palestine is the realisation of a fundamental, constant, and fundamental line of Portuguese foreign policy.

Key points:

  • Canada, Australia, and Portugal have formally recognized Palestinian statehood.
  • The recognition aligns with the U.K.'s stance.
  • Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of captives.
