The victory of Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the US presidential election has been accompanied by a reaction from European officials.

President of European Council Charles Michel also congratulated Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on his victory and expressed readiness to expand transatlantic cooperation.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel issued a statement congratulating Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential election, saying that cooperation between the two sides of the Atlantic is the only way to overcome the current great challenges.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde also congratulated Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential election and announced their country's readiness to work with the new US administration.

Joe Biden was elected the 46th President of the United States with 279 votes against only 214 votes of Donald Trump, and Kamala Harris was elected as the first female Vice President.
