US behavior matters to Iran, not matter Trump or Biden: Zarif says

Tehran (IP) - Iran's Foreign Minister said that what matters to Iran is the behavior of the United States and not the promises and slogans of the presidential candidates.

Iran PressIran News: In an interview with CBS on Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran has no preference between Donald Trump or Joe Biden.

"What is important for us is how the White House behaves after the election, not what promises are there, what slogans are made. The behavior of the US is important. If the US decides to stop its malign behavior against Iran, then it will be a different story no matter who sits in the White House," Zarif stressed.

Zarif went on to say: "If we wanted to 'renegotiate' the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), we would have done it with President Trump four years ago," Zarif told CBS News, adding: "under no circumstances would Tehran consider renegotiating the terms of a deal which has since been adopted as a United Nations Security Council Resolution.

"We can find a way to re-engage, obviously. But reengagement does not mean renegotiation," he said, adding: "It means the US coming back to the negotiating table."

The Iranian foreign minister stated: "Joe Biden knows that if he wins the election, Iran will not renegotiate the JCPOA."

He also pointed to the US sanctions against Iran, saying: "The sanctions have hurt Iran, but they have not brought the type of political change the US desired."

Iranian Foreign Minister also referred to the US intelligence services' claim about Iran's intervention in the US presidential election and called Trump "the single person who is making the most important and effective affront against the US electoral system."

The US government has resumed sanctions against Iran after scrapping the JCPOA and has resorted to provocative policies against Iran, including the assassination of Lt. Gen. Ghasem Soleimani, Late Commander of Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC).

Trump had promised to persuade Iran to come to the negotiating table to reach an allegedly better deal through withdrawing from the JCPOA and a policy of maximum pressure campaign.

More than two years after that promise, the US government has failed to achieve this goal, which is why Trump has been criticized by various groups in the United States, especially in the run-up to the November presidential election.
