Iran Press/ Europe: Vladimir Zheglov drew attention to "major violations of human rights in the US".
According to Zheglov, the Russian side has repeatedly pointed to alarming episodes related to long-lasting police violence and systemic racism in the US. "However, the impression is that these problems not just remain unaddressed by American authorities, but they even worsen," Zheglov stressed.
According to Itar-Tass, the Russian diplomat noted that after the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man, several other incidents have been reported in which African-Americans died as a result of US police abuse. Meanwhile, the reaction of the US public was predictable, and a new wave of mass protests gripped Philadelphia, Washington, and New York overnight to Tuesday, the diplomat said.
"Protests erupting across the country are a clear proof that US authorities cannot, or maybe even don’t seek to cope with the underlying causes of the current developments," the diplomat said. He explained that he was referring to "systemic racism and police abuse in the country, that the US and foreign human rights activists have been pointing to for decades, along with concerned international organizations, including the OSCE and the UN," Zheglov stressed.
With this in view, the diplomat urged the US to strictly abide by its commitments within the framework of the European security agency and ensure the rights and freedoms of all citizens irrespective of their ethnicity.
Mass protests and riots sparked in many US states following the death of African-American George Floyd. He died in hospital after a police officer used a chokehold during his arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25.
