Quartet meeting on Afghan refugees held virtually

The 7th session of the strategic quartet committee on Afghan refugees was held virtually on Thursday with representatives of the governments of Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Iran PressAsia: Appreciating the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to host the meeting, Director-General of Foreigners and Migrants Department at Iran's Interior Ministry Mahdi Mahmoudi said that the outbreak of COVID-19 and imposition of oppressive and inhumane sanctions on Iran has severely affected of the humanitarian service in the country.

"More measures should be taken to support the voluntary return of Afghan refugees from Iran and Pakistan to their country," Mahmoudi highlighted.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are about one million registered (legal) Afghan refugees living in Iran.

About two million Afghan refugees also live in Iran illegally and without identity documents.
