The German foreign ministry said that the US recourse to the mechanism of reinstating UN sanctions against Iran has no legal effect.

Iran PressEurope: "Germany remains committed to maintaining the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," the German foreign ministry said in a statement, stressing that the United States has no legal right to reinstate sanctions on Iran.

The permanent representatives of China and Russia to the United Nations also wrote a letter to the Security Council on Sunday describing the US attempt to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran as illegal.

Zhang Jun and Vasily Nebenzya, the Permanent Representatives of China and Russia to the United Nations, stated in the letter that the US effort to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran is illegal and that the suspension of sanctions on Iran would continue.

Despite the opposition of most members of the UN Security Council, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday claimed that all UN sanctions against Iran, including arms embargoes, had been reinstated.

In response to the US claims that UN sanctions on Iran had been reinstated, in a joint statement on Sunday, the foreign ministers of the three European member states of the JCPOA reaffirmed their full commitment to UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA in 2015.

US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew his country from the international agreement on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, in violation of Washington's commitments under the JCPOA, and announced the return of nuclear sanctions.

Trump's move has drawn widespread domestic and international condemnation.
