In a letter to the Security Council on Sunday, the Permanent Representatives of China and Russia to the United Nations described US efforts to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran as illegal and stating that the suspension of sanctions on Iran continues.

Iran PressAmerica: Zhang Jun and Vasily Nebenzya, the Permanent Representatives of China and Russia to the United Nations, stated in a letter to the UN Security Council that the US attempt to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran is illegal and the suspension of sanctions against Iran will continue.

Despite the opposition of most members of the UN Security Council, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday claimed that all UN sanctions against Iran, including arms embargoes, had been reinstated.

This claim by the United States has met with widespread opposition.

The European sides of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), China and Russia recently issued a joint statement referring to the unilateral withdrawal and the suspension of US participation in the JCPOA.

They stressed that Washington could not begin the process of reinstating UN sanctions against Iran under Security Council Resolution 2231.

US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew his country from the international agreement on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, in violation of Washington's commitments under the JCPOA, and announced the return of nuclear sanctions

Trump's move has drawn widespread domestic and international condemnation.
