Tehran (IP) - Iran's foreign minister said the European troika should reject the US economic terrorism, in case they want the full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran Press/Iran news: In a tweet released on Thursday, Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran rejects nuclear weapons for religious and strategic reasons, which is far weightier than any “deal".

"But if E3/EU want full implementation of CBMs & enhanced transparency that JCPOA provides, they should reject US Economic Terrorism just as they've rejected its vandalism in the UNSC," he stressed.

On August 20, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo notified the United Nations that Washington was initiating the process to reinstate all UN sanctions on Iran.

Thirteen council members expressed their opposition, arguing that Washington’s move is void given it is using a process agreed under a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that it quit two years ago, according to Reuters.

Under the JCPOA, the state parties - Russia, the US, the UK, China, France, and Germany - can trigger a snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions on Iran if Tehran violates the deal. Washington left the JCPOA in 2018.

The Trump administration after the last failure in the UNSC argues that UN sanctions on Iran should come back into force 30 days after its decision last month to reimpose them under the terms of a nuclear accord from which it withdrew two years ago.

But the other four permanent members of the Security Council — China, France, Russia and the UK — oppose a US move they say lacks legal standing because Washington has left the UN-backed accord.
