Johannesburg (IP) - The message of Arabaeen and the procession of millions of adherents to the message of Imam Hussain (PBUH) confirms that the lessons of the sacrifice at Karbala have relevance for all times.

Iran PressAfrica: Speaking to Iran Press, senior lecturer in the Religion Studies Department at the University of Johannesburg, Dr. Shahid Mathee noted that the Arbaeen process in a current context is part of the global struggle of awareness against the acts of desecration against the Holy Quran and for the liberation of Palestine.

“On this particular day, this theatre will give rise to this allegiance, to make it concrete and embody it to face the tyrants of today; in facing US imperialism, in facing the Zionist enemy, but also creating love for Palestine, which means striving for Palestine.”

“Arbaeen spurs us on to action to Amr bil Ma'rouf and Nahi anil Munkar (enjoing good and forbid wrong).”

Historically, Arbaeen marks the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions at Karbala, in current-day Iraq. But the enduring message that has carried through centuries is of rising up against oppression and tyranny. Millions march to Karbala annually for the commemoration.

Mathee noted; “A very important and specific significance of Arbaeen this year is on the question of Quran burning ... because it is not only about burning the Quran, it is linked to the arrogance of the Western powers.”

In adopting stances on such matters, Arbaeen not only remembers the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (PBUH) and his companions but reaffirms allegiance to his struggle.
