Coronavirus death toll rises to 2835 in China

The death toll from the COVID-19 disease, caused by the coronavirus, has risen to 2,835 in China.

Iran PressAsia: A total of 427 new cases of the novel coronavirus were confirmed on the Chinese mainland as of midnight on Friday (28 February) and 47 new deaths were reported, according to China's National Health Commission.

The total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland now stands at 79,251 and the cumulative death toll is 2,835, CGTN reported.

Also, over 5,800 confirmed cases and 85 deaths have been reported outside of China.

Italy has 888 confirmed cases, including 21 fatalities, the most in Europe.

The U.S. has confirmed 63 coronavirus cases. The Dow and the S&P 500 suffered their biggest weekly losses since the 2008 financial crisis.

The WHO has said that the global coronavirus risk is now 'very high'.

The United States has confirmed the third COVID-19 case in Oregon's Washington County involving a person who isn't believed to have traveled overseas or come in close contact with anyone who had it, indicating that the virus may be spreading undetected in local communities, according to local media reports.

Elsewhere, a total of 940 coronavirus cases were reported in Japan with 11 deaths, according to authorities.

South Korea reported on Saturday 594 more coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 2,931, according to the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

South Korea has so far reported 16 deaths from the new coronavirus.

Africa has long been a source of concern, and a case in Nigeria raised fears that more infections might lurk there undetected.

In Europe, caseloads soared as Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania, Wales, and Northern Ireland reported their first confirmed infections.

The Coronavirus outbreak began in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and appears to have been originated from non-domestic animals. Chinese officials now admit that the virus probably spread in Wuhan in November or even earlier.

About 84,000 people in at least 56 countries have been infected, and about 2,900 people have died of COVID-19.
