British Ambassador to Iran Rob Macaire

UK Ambassador to Iran Rob Macaire was arrested for several hours then released after provoking and arranging suspicious acts in front of Tehran's Amir Kabir University, local media reported on Saturday evening.

Iran Press/Iran news: He was instigating and leading undiplomatic and radical acts by taking part in a students' candle vigil to commemorate victims of the crashed Ukrainian Boeing 737 passengers which was mistakenly shot down on Wednesday.

The meeting on Saturday afternoon went violent after certain thugs took the law into their hands.

The British envoy was served a protest and will be summoned on Sunday as a follow-up to his abnormal act, according to the reports.

The plane belonging to Ukraine International Airlines crashed near Tehran minutes after the take-off from Imam Khomeini Airport on Wednesday as it turned out that it was mistakenly targeted by air defense batteries.

Britain's Foreign Office in a statement confirmed the arrest of its ambassador in Tehran but denounced it as an unjustified move.

It failed short in providing any explanation of how Macaire found his way in the gathering.

World leaders including the British queen have expressed their condolences over the tragic incident which killed all the 176 passengers aboard.

Iran has acknowledged the plane was shot down unintentionally and promised full investigation to the probe on the incident.
