A suicide bomber exploded a device near Afghan clerics gathering on Monday in Kabul where they had gathered to denounce terrorism and call for peace.

Over 2,000 religious scholars gathered at Polytechnic University in Kabul and issued a joint fatwa against the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

The security official said that a suicide bomber had activated an explosive device, as the clerics were leaving the gathering in the west of Kabul.

Kabul district police chief later told journalists, that the blast killed 8 people, the Reuters news agency reports.

"Our initial information shows that the suicide attack took place when guests were exiting the hall" where the meeting was taking place at around 11.30 am (0700 GMT)," police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai told the Tolo News broadcaster.

Earlier on the day religious scholars from around the country issued a fatwa, saying “the ongoing war in Afghanistan is illegal and has no root in the Sharia law”.

The religious scholars said that according to the Holy Quran, killing of Muslims is "Haram" and “illegitimate”. Meanwhile, the religious scholars repeated their call on the Taliban to accept the Afghan government’s “unconditional” peace offer.  “We the religious scholars call on the Taliban to give a positive response to the Afghan government’s peace offer in order to prevent further bloodshed,” the religious scholars said.

A series of bombings in Kabul that has killed dozens of people in recent months has showed no sign of easing during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
