The deputy of the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mary Alice Hayward, will replace Director-General Yukiya Amano who passed away on Monday.

Iran Press/ Europe: The International Atomic Energy announced in a statement on Monday that Mary Alice Hayward, the agency’s deputy director-general and head of the department of management, will lead the agency in the interim period, the agency said.

The Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced the passing away of Director General Yukiya Amano, expressing its deepest sadness on Monday.

According to the IAEA official website, the Secretariat wishes to share his most recent reflection which he intended to include in his letter to the Board of Governors announcing his decision to step down: 

“During the past decade, the Agency delivered concrete results to achieve the objective of “Atoms for Peace and Development”, thanks to the support of the Member States and the dedication of Agency staff. I am very proud of our achievements and grateful to the Member States and Agency staff.”

The IAEA flag will be lowered to half-mast.
