Former foreign secretary will succeed Theresa May as Britain’s next prime minister after beating Jeremy Hunt in the race for the Conservative Party leadership.

Iran Press/Europe: Boris Johnson has become Britain’s prime minister after he was elected leader of the Conservative party, defeating Jeremy Hunt in the party’s leadership contest.

Johnson won 92,153 votes by members of the Conservative Party On Tuesday, Reuters reported. His main rival, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, won 46,656, Iran Press reported.

The election of Johnson as the new Tory leader had different reactions.

His rival, Jeremy Hunt congratulated Johnson saying that he will be a 'great' Prime Minister.

On the other side, the opposition Labour Party has organized a protest outside Parliament on Thursday, urging a general election in Britain.

"Tory incompetence has led to a deadlocked Parliament, a deeply divided country, and a government led by a man decided by just 160,000 Tory members," the party's Facebook event says.

The US President, Donald Trump congratulated Boris Johnson, saying he will be 'great' as UK's next Prime Minister.

The newly appointed European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen greeted Johnson with a rejection of the incoming British prime minister’s Brexit demands and an ominous warning about the “challenging times ahead”.

She said both sides had a 'duty' to deliver a deal, adding, “There are many difficult issues we will tackle together.”

“It is important to build up a strong working relationship because we have a duty to deliver something which is good for the people in Europe and the United Kingdom,” the European Commission president said.
