The Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced its condolences following the passing away of Director General Yukiya Amano, expressing deep sadness on Monday.

Iran Press/Europe: The Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency regrets to inform with deep sadness, the passing away of Director General Yukiya Amano on July 22. He served as chairman of the IAEA's policy-making board of governors in 2005-06. In 2009, Amano succeeded "Mohamed ElBaradei" as the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, gaining two-thirds of the council's votes.

He was elected for the second time for the same position in 2013 and he was reinstated for the 3rd time for the next four years as Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2017.

Amano acknowledged the Islamic Republic of Iran's full compliance to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 15 consecutive reports, including 5 reports after the US withdrawal from the JCPOA.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, conveyed his deep condolences for #Amano demise, saying they worked very closely. He commended his skillful & professional performance as DG of IAEA resulted in complete closure of so-called #PMD & 15 consecutive reports confirming Iran's full compliance to the #JCPOA.

For the next IAEA chief position, the race started last week as it became clear Amano would be stepping down. Names being touted include Argentina's ambassador to the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, and diplomats say the agency's chief coordinator, Cornel Feruta of Romania, is likely to put himself forward. 203/211
