Shiraz (IP) - Twenty people were killed in flash flooding in Iran’s southern province of Fars, and three others are missing.

Iran PressIran news: In an interview with IRIB, Yusuf Kargar, the Governor of Estahban, stated: "In the evening of July 22, heavy rain in Estahban caused the Rodbal River to overflow and flood, as a result of which 16 people died, and 7 people are missing."

He added: "From the discovered bodies, the identity of 13 people is known, and the search for the missing persons is still ongoing."

Mehdi Khobyar, deputy of the Red Crescent Society of Fars province, later said that twenty people were killed.

Also, three people are missing, and 15 bodies of the 20 discovered have been identified.

Estahban is located at a distance of 174 km from Shiraz.

A weather system causing heavy rain is covering Iran’s south and several Arab countries of the Persian Gulf.

Iran has been suffering severe dry spells for years.

In 2019, heavy floods in the south left at least 76 people dead and caused damages estimated at more than $2 billion.
