Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif congratulated the Lebanese on the formation of a new national unity government, describing it as a great achievement.

Iran Press/Iran news: In a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri on Monday evening in Beirut, Zarif expressed hope that the formation of a new Lebanese government, by the popular vote in the recent parliamentary elections, would have a significant contribution to the advancement of Lebanese affairs.

"If the Lebanese government ask us, Tehran is ready to cooperate with Beirut in all fields," Zarif reiterated.

Zarif is the first foreign minister to travel to Beirut after the formation of the new Lebanese government.

The Iranian foreign minister's visit to Beirut came a few weeks after Lebanon's presidency announced the formation of the new national unity government, putting an end to a nine-month political stalemate, which fueled the Arab country's economic woes.

The new government, headed by Hariri, includes 30 ministers from most Lebanese political factions, which have been in talks after the country in May 2018 held its first parliamentary elections in nine years.

The top Iranian diplomat arrived at the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on Sunday, for a two-day official visit.

Zarif held talks with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil on Sunday evening.

On the last leg of his visit, Zarif participated in a ceremony by Iranian embassy, to commemorate the 40'th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution at a Beirut hotel. 103/211/213
