At least 330 people, many of them teenagers, are said to have been injured in Sunday night’s incident during the O Marisquiño festival in the city of Vigo, north-west Spain.

The wooden boards cracked along a central section, about 40 metres long, and people slid down into the sea below, emergency services said.

Divers were deployed as a desperate search ensued however there have been no reports of any fatalities.

Images show scores of emergency services workers at the scene during the aftermath as the injured were taken to various hospitals.

Vigo's mayor Abel Caballero said the platform that collapsed just before midnight was 30 metres long and 10 metres wide.

He added that there will be an investigation into the causes of the incident.

The president of the Vigo port authority, Enrique Cesar Lopez Veiga, said he suspects there was a structural problem in the boardwalk, which is supported by concrete pillars.

He told Cadena Ser radio that the boardwalk collapsed "probably because of excessive weight" on it.
