The Pentagon confirmed that an Iranian surface-to-air missile shot down a US military surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz Thursday morning.

Iran pressAmerica: Iran shot down an American drone in an 'unprovoked attack' over international waters, US  Pentagon officials said on Thursday, according to the Washington Times.

Also in an statement released on Thursday morning,  US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it can confirm that a US Navy Broad Area Maritime Surveillance ISR aircraft was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile system while operating in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz at approximately 11:35 p.m. GMT on June 19, 2019.

However, CENTCOM spokesman Navy Capt. Bill Urban claimed that "Iranian reports that the aircraft was over Iran are false. This was an unprovoked attack on a US surveillance asset in international airspace.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi on Thursday reacted to the shooting down of a US surveillance drone flying over Iran’s southern skies, voicing the country’s “strong protest to such aggressive and provocative measures.”

Also commenting on the operation Major General Hussein Salami on Thursday also said that the downing of a US drone carried a clear message to Iran’s arch enemy, the United States.

IRGC has shot down a US RQ-4 spy drone close to the Iranian province of Hormozgan in Persian Gulf Shores on Thursday. 208/104
