United Nations (IP) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the latest Israeli airstrikes on homes in the Beit Lahia neighborhood of northern Gaza, urging an immediate ceasefire as the humanitarian crisis worsens.

Iran PressAmerica: "I unequivocally condemn the continuing and widespread loss of life in Gaza, including the recent Israeli airstrikes on Beit Lahia, which resulted in the deaths of dozens of Palestinians, including women and children," said Deputy UN Spokesperson Farhan Haq, relaying Guterres’ statement to reporters on Monday.

Guterres emphasized the need to protect civilians in all circumstances, adding, "Civilians must always be respected and protected." His remarks follow Israeli air raids that devastated the densely populated Beit Lahia area over the weekend, killing scores of Palestinians.

The Secretary-General also expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian conditions in northern Gaza, where mass displacement and a shortage of basic necessities have left the population on the brink of disaster. The situation for civilians in northern Gaza is dire. Mass displacement, lack of food, water, and medical supplies are threatening the survival of thousands, Haq said.

Guterres has called for immediate and unhindered access for humanitarian aid and relief teams to enter Gaza, where the ongoing Israeli genocide has left tens of thousands of people in urgent need. Recent attacks on hospitals in northern Gaza have further exacerbated the crisis, endangering the lives of countless civilians, he added.

The UN Secretary-General reiterated his demand for the protection of hospitals, medical staff, and patients, urging that they be allowed safe access to medical care and essential supplies. Without urgent humanitarian access, the toll of human suffering will continue to rise, Haq warned.

Guterres also renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all captives in Gaza, stressing the need for urgent diplomatic efforts to halt the violence and prevent further loss of life.
