Niamey (IP) - Nigeriens took part in mass demonstrations in Niamey, the capital of this country, and demanded the cancellation of ECOWAS sanctions against their country.

Iran PressAfrica: The meeting of ECOWAS member states is scheduled for Sunday (December 10) in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

Different strata of people, institutions, and political and civil bodies of Niger were widely present in the demonstrations to protest against ECOWAS and supporters of French imperialist policies late on Saturday.

Demonstrators in Niamey called on Niger's military government to withdraw from ECOWAS.

The senior military commanders of Niger also joined the demonstrators and were welcomed and applauded by the people.

The people of Niger had earlier supported the ruling military junta of Niger to force the French government to withdraw its ambassador and troops from the country.

Demonstrators in Niamey also chanted anti-imperialist, anti-French, and anti-ECOWAS slogans and waved the flags of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, asserting Niger's national sovereignty and full independence.

Maikel Zodi, head of the Patriotic Movement for the Protection of Niger, said in an interview with Iran Press in Niamey, ECOWAS should remove the sanctions against Niger.

According to Maikel Zodi, the huge anti-imperialist demonstrations show that they are moving in the right direction and the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland should meet all the needs of the people.204
