Millions of Yemen children face starvation as Coronavirus outbreak worsens

UNICEF Yemen’s chief of communication said that the number of malnourished children could increase to 2.4 million.

Iran PressMiddle East: The spread of COVID-19, coupled with an ongoing five-year Saudi aggression on Yemen is creating the perfect storm for a massive humanitarian crisis, said Bismarck Swangin.

There is widespread and serious malnutrition, and children are continuing to die on a daily basis,” Swangin added.

While Yemen has been reporting only around 1,300 cases of the Coronavirus, the true extent of the outbreak likely has been much worse, he asserted.

Limited testing capabilities and access to medical facilities made it difficult to gauge the gravity of the situation, UNICEF Yemen’s chief highlighted.

Nongovernmental organizations have been operating around the clock in Yemen, tasked with balancing the nutrition needs of the population while avoiding the inevitable spread of COVID-19.

Saudi Arabia and UAE launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing Ansarullah.

The war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories.

The UN says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.
