The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has called for the prosecution of U.S. President Donald Trump over his directly involvement in war crimes and genocide in Gaza.

Why it matters:

The call to prosecute U.S. President Donald Trump marks a serious call from a major rights organization, highlighting the growing civilian death toll at Israeli aid distribution sites in Gaza, making them as zones of mass killings under international scrutiny.

What they’re saying:

In a statement issued statement on Saturday: “Trump’s support for the Israeli mechanisms of forced aid distribution has contributed to turning humanitarian zones into killing fields for hungry civilians.”

It further said that armed personnel from a U.S. security company, operating on behalf of the institute, were involved in the gunfire and used tear gas against the people gathered for receiving aid.

State of play:

Over the past two months alone, Israeli regime forces and U.S.-linked security personnel have reportedly killed at least 829 Palestinians and wounded over 5,500 near aid distribution points across Gaza.

Context:

At least 30 civilians were killed and more than 180 wounded during a shooting incident at an aid distribution site in northern Rafah.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s war on Gaza has killed over 57,400 Palestinians and injured more than 138,000, according to local health authorities. Aid distribution zones themselves have become killing grounds, with hundreds of civilians shot while waiting for food.

Key points:

  • The organization says Israeli regime is turning humanitarian aid zones into killing fields and using starvation as a weapon, commiting war crimes and part of an ongoing genocidal campaign against Palestinians.
